California Radio Amateur is Wildfire Victim
A Calaveras County, California, radio amateur — Mark McCloud, K6YCV — fell victim to the Butte Fire on September 16. He was one of two fatalities that resulted from the Butte Fire, southeast of Sacramento.
An ARRL member, McCloud, 66, was said to have been disabled. Calaveras County Coroner Kevin Raggio said McCloud and the second victim both had refused to evacuate the area and were found dead in their homes, which were destroyed by the fire.
McCloud had lived in Mokelumne Hill, California, for 8 years, and on his QRZ.com page he spoke of enjoying the “wildlife, trees, and a whole lot of room” there and keeping busy with antenna projects and a vegetable garden. Raggio’s office identified the second fire victim as 80-year-old Owen Goldsmith.
