The ARRL Offers Five New Books for Fall
The ARRL has just released five new books that you are going to want to have in your shack. This fall, two favorites have been re-released and are chock-full of new information: hardcover and softcover editions of The ARRL Handbook for Radio Communications (90th edition), The ARRL Operating Manual (10th edition). In addition, the ARRL is proud to offer three new titles: The Amateur Radio Public Service Handbook, The Care and Feeding of Transmission Lines by QST Technical Editor Joel Hallas, W1ZR, and Antenna Modeling for Beginners by H. Ward Silver, N0AX.
The ARRL Handbook for Radio Communication (90th edition)
A lot has changed since the ARRL Handbook was first published in 1926. But one thing is still the same: The ARRL Handbook continues to be the standard reference among radio amateurs and other technologists -- experimenters, engineers and students. The fields of radio and electronics are constantly evolving, and no other publication provides as accurate a snapshot of the state of the art as the ARRL Handbook.
Dozens of contributing experts and technical editors have helped fill the 90th edition of the ever-popular ARRL Handbook with essential information from across the expanse of radio communication fundamentals and practical applications. Clear and thorough explanations cover nearly every aspect of radio and antenna design, equipment construction, and station assembly.
The following are just some of the new projects and content included in the 90th edition:
- New antenna projects, including a low-band quad, delta loops, coaxial dipoles for VHF or UHF, and a skeleton slot for 14-30 MHz.
- New material on power supply polarity protection circuits.
- 144 MHz band-pass filter for reducing harmonics.
- Updated Pebble Crusher QRP transmitter construction project.
- Design software on CD-ROM, including Elsie™ filter and Pi-El matching networks.
A CD-ROM is included with each ARRL Handbook that has all of the fully searchable text and illustrations in the printed book, as well as expanded supplemental content, software, PC board templates and other support files.
The 90th edition of the ever-popular ARRL Handbook for Radio Communications is available in both hardcover and softcover editions. For a limited time, get the hardcover edition for the softcover price of only $49.95 (regular $59.95) for a limited time only when you order now from the ARRL.
The ARRL Operating Manual (10th edition)
The 10th edition of The ARRL Operating Manual for Radio Amateurs is the most complete guide to Amateur Radio operating. For decades, this ARRL flagship title has been recognized by radio amateurs as the trustworthy source of everything you need to know about ham radio operating -- from exploring the broad range of activities and technology, to sharpening your on-air skills. It’s filled with the information every ham needs, from newcomers looking for basic operating techniques to more experienced hams looking for new things to do with their gear.
Every chapter of this 10th edition has been updated to reflect the most current information, including a brand new chapter on remote station control over the Internet. Whether your interests are more technical, or geared toward public service, you’ll turn to The Operating Manual for information on what to operate, where to operate and how to operate.
Regularly priced at $34.95, The ARRL Operating Manual (10th edition) is available to ARRL members for the special price of $29.95.
The Amateur Radio Public Service Handbook
Amateur Radio has consistently been the most reliable means of communications when other systems have failed. Hams work closely with disaster relief agency officials from FEMA, the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army and other response organizations to offer wireless communications aid. From wildfires and earthquakes, to marathons and road races, ham radio works when getting the message through is critical.
The Amateur Radio Public Service Handbook is for all hams who volunteer their time and skill to serve their communities. It provides knowledge needed for communicating quickly and effectively during disasters, emergencies and community events. This new book from the ARRL also offers readers an opportunity to learn more about the Amateur Radio Service and its unique role in supporting the public.
Regularly priced at $39.95, The Amateur Radio Public Service Handbook is available to ARRL members for the special price of $34.95.
The Care and Feeding of Transmission Lines
Transmission lines are an integral part of the art and science of radio. Designed to carry RF power over short-to-medium distances with minimal loss, properly selected and installed transmission lines can be as important as radio equipment and antennas for a station’s success. The Care and Feeding of Transmission Lines is a radio amateur’s guide to understanding transmission lines. It includes an introduction to the various types of transmission lines and key parameters of coaxial cable and balanced line types, as well as the different types of connectors. With this book, you will learn how to select the most appropriate transmission line for an application and how to install it, along with maintenance techniques to help extend the useful life of the line.
Contents include:
- What is a transmission line and why do we need one?
- What are the types of transmission lines and why so many?
- Let’s examine coaxial transmission line.
- Other types of unbalanced line.
- Let’s examine balanced transmission line.
- Transmission line interconnections.
- Determining which line is best suited for a particular application.
- Application and installation notes.
- Transmission line care and maintenance.
The Care and Feeding of Transmission Lines is written by QST Technical Editor Joel Hallas, W1ZR, author of Basic Radio: Understanding the Key Building Blocks, Basic Antennas: Understanding Practical Antennas and Design, The ARRL Guide to Antenna Tuners, ARRL’s Hamspeak: A Dictionary for Radio Amateurs and the upcoming book with the working title Understanding and Using Antenna Analyzers (due out early spring 2013).
Regularly priced at $27.95, The Care and Feeding of Transmission Lines is available to ARRL members for the special price of $24.95.
Antenna Modeling for Beginners
Over the last decade, computerized antenna modeling has advanced greatly with inexpensive -- and even free -- modeling software. A powerful tool in Amateur Radio, modeling can help hams design antennas and optimize their performance. Antenna Modeling for Beginners is an introductory guide to using modeling software for designing and evaluating antennas. It provides a detailed introduction to EZNEC, the most popular antenna modeling program used by radio amateurs today. With this book, hams can set up basic modeling software, evaluate and adjust pre-designed models, and create their own models. Step-by-step exercises and explanations will make it easy to learn important functions and procedures along the way.
Antenna Modeling for Beginners is written by ARRL Contributing Editor H. Ward Silver, N0AX, author of ARRL’s Hands-On Radio Experiments, Ham Radio for Dummies, Two-Way Radios & Scanners for Dummies and the novella Zone of Iniquity.
Regularly priced at $38.95, Antenna Modeling for Beginners is available to ARRL members for the special price of $34.95.
