FCC CORES Registration Instructions

NEW USERS

  • Create an FCC CORES Account

Anyone conducting business with the FCC must be registered in FCC CORES (COmission REgistration System) and be issued an FCC Registration Number (FRN). This is not an option.

Upon registration, an FCC Registration Number (FRN) will be assigned. This number will be used to uniquely identify the individual or the club in all transactions with the FCC.

  • Individuals

Create an FCC CORES (COmission REgistration System) Username account at FCC CORES Registration with a unique username (a valid email address) and password.  After creating the account, when logged in, register for, and receive a unique FRN (FCC Registration Number).

View the instructions on the FCC Registration Help page, the New Users guide to ULS for step by step instructions on the registration process or the Commission Registration System Video Tutorials page for videos that help guide CORES users through a variety of situations.

For assistance, call the FCC Licensing Support Center at 877-480-3201 (Mon.-Fri. 8 a.m.-6 p.m. ET), or submit a help request on the FCC’s Wireless Licensing Help Center website.

  • Amateur Radio Club or Military Recreation Station Licenses

Just as with an individual, the club/military recreation station must create an account in the FCC CORES registration system.

Create an FCC CORES Username account with a unique username (a valid email address) and password. The username email address associated with the club/military rec station cannot be the same email address used for a personal account. It must be a unique email address that is not already registered in the system.

After creating the account, when logged in, register for and receive a unique FRN for your club. Do not use a personal FRN as this is tied to your social security number and other personal information. In the CORES Registration system, the club/military recreation station will apply as a "Business" (Registration Type), "Private Sector" (Business Type) and "Amateur Club" (Business subtype). If the club/military recreation station does not have a taxpayer ID, then for the statement: "If your business does not have an Employer Identification Number, select a reason:" select - "Amateur Club". Complete the remainder of the registration form and hit submit. Remember to make note of the FRN and password information. The club/military recreation station will use that new automatically generated FRN for all their FCC transactions, including applying for the new license and all subsequent filings.

Note: An individual should never associate their personal FRN to a club license. Their social security number is linked to their FRN and their ham license which should not be associated with or available to a club. The club should be a separate entity with their own FRN as the club license belongs to the club organization not any individual.

Additional information and instructions about club and military recreation station licensing are located on our Club Call Signs webpage.

LEGACY CORES USERS MUST REGISTER IN THE NEW CORES SYSTEM

  • Updated FCC CORES System

Legacy CORES (COmission REgistration System) users must register in the new CORES System.  The FCC retired the legacy version of CORES on July 15, 2022.  The updated version of CORES Registration has been available since 2016, but most amateurs do not know it is available.

The FCC is advising all users to transition to the
updated CORES system as soon as possible to take advantage of the new features and security enhancements.  Additionally, licensees must be registered in the new system to be able to pay the $35 FCC application fee required for license renewals, vanity call sign requests, and new licenses.

    CORES INSTRUCTIONS
    1. Licensees who haven’t already created a CORES account must register a unique username (your email address) and a password. Visit the FCC CORES website to set up your account. If you don’t know your FRN, you may search for it on that web page. You will need your FRN for the next step.
    2.  Log into your new account and click the first option, ASSOCIATE USERNAME TO FRN.
    3.  Enter your FRN and comment. An example of a comment is ”Associating FRN.”
    4. Click CONTINUE.
    5.  If you know your password to your FRN, enter it now. This password will likely be different from the one used for your username account. If you do not know your FRN password, choose the “Forgot FRN Password” option. Please refrain from guessing the password more than twice, as repeated failed attempts may result in being locked out of the account. You can also call the FCC at 877-480-3201 to have them reset your password for you.
    6.
Once you have completed these steps and your FRN has been associated with your username, the site should bring you back to the main menu. Log out.

You can view these instructions on the FCC Registration Help page.  Your FRN can also be found in the system by searching for your call sign on the FCC’s License Search page.

The FCC also offers helpful CORES Tutorial Videos. Specifically, view the videos “Getting Started With the New CORES” which explains how to register for a CORES Username account and “Associating an FRN to a Username” which instructs legacy CORES users on how to link an existing FRN to a username.  The FCC also has a license renewal instructions page.  Visit the ARRL website for further information about the FCC application fee.
