NPOTA Success Leads to NPS Comms Assignment
Congratulations are in order to Jeff Dahn, KB3ZUK, who was able to convert his years of law enforcement experience and his activity in last year’s ARRL National Parks on the Air (NPOTA) program into a volunteer assignment helping the National Park Service (NPS) in Washington, DC with their auxiliary communications during Inauguration Weekend. Dahn’s efforts will help strengthen the ties between ARRL and NPS. Thanks, Jeff!
New ARRL Teacher's Institute Promo Video
ARRL has produced a 5-minute video promoting the ARRL Teacher’s Institute (TI), an expenses-paid seminar that helps instructors at all grade levels learn how to use Amateur Radio to teach STEM subjects in their classroom. The application period for Summer 2017 TI’s just started. Please forward this video to schools in your area.
Collegiate Amateur Radio Initiative Update
ARRL’s Collegiate Amateur Radio Initiative (CARI) just received some seed money, thanks to an endowment from Dr. Ed Snyder, W1YSM. The W1YSM Snyder Family Collegiate Amateur Radio Endowment Fund will be used to help coordinate CARI activities at ARRL events and help facilitate communication among college Amateur Radio stations. Members of collegiate clubs and alumni are invited to join the ARRL CARI Facebook group.
CARI will have a presence at the Orlando HamCation the weekend of February 10. Stop by the ARRL booth to get involved
Congratulations and welcome to the following new ARRL Public Information Officers and Public Information Coordinators!

Media Hit: 100 Amateur Radio exams for KH6H!
The Maui Amateur Radio Club recently honored member Mel Fukunaga, KH6H, for administering his 100th Amateur Radio exam session. The Maui Times covered the event. Congratulations to the Maui ARC and KH6H for their efforts!
PR Tip: “When A Press Release Isn’t The Answer”
There are times when issuing a press release may not be the most effective way to tell your story. The folks at NonProfitPR.org offer other suggestions on getting the word out for your club.
I spent the morning of February 1 on the New England National Scenic Trail, shooting a promo video with ARRL CEO Tom Gallagher, NY2RF. This will be part of ARRL’s effort to cross-promote content across ARRL’s multiple platforms: QST, social media, and podcasts.
We have a team of young copyeditors, videographers and social media specialists at ARRL these days. These are smart people under the age of 25, who know how to communicate. Most offer a broad array of skills in new media: Writing, copyediting, social media and audio/video experience. We’ve all known for years that we need an influx of young blood in Amateur Radio; who better than skilled people in that demographic to help us find proper venues and tailor our messaging to reach their peers?
If you're looking for help with your club's online presence, find a young adult, and ask them to maintain your club’s website, Facebook page or Twitter account. Listen to their suggestions. We can learn as much from them as we can teach them.
Thanks for all you do.
